Always gleaning for plastics, on the beach and beyond, 2025
Reclaimed ocean plastics, reclaimed industrial plastics and wire.
My practice focuses on concepts of abundance, excess and waste, and reflects on the plastic I observe and collect on my slow walks to Sydney's iconic Bondi Beach and the nearby Rose Bay beach. Out of this waste I make long garlands, usually colour-coded for impact. I also incorporate industrial and reject plastics from sources such as Banish and Reverse Garbage, interrupting their journey to landfill, as well as materials that were kindly gifted from other beach and urban gleaners.
For the Berry Heritage Rotunda my garlands are suspended within the rotunda. The Rotunda’s seating provides the perfect opportunity for visitors to sit and reflect on the abundance and range of familiar and often single-use plastics in the installation. In this space I hope that visitors can have a deeper meditation about the serious global problem of plastics and how we as individuals and together can curb the plastic tide.
