SOPHIE CAPE

PRINCESS STREET RESERVE AND BERRY SHOWGROUND PAVILION

The work of Sophie Cape explodes with violence across the canvas, it is vast in scale and performative in execution. Harking back to her past as an elite (now damaged) athlete, Cape seeks a raw direct expression through engagement with the body’s physicality in order to render instinctual and emotional acts of expression. Working outside, free from constraints, Cape uses unconventional mediums in an attempt to excavate her unconscious, searching for the beauty and horror that is the exquisite tragedy of human nature. Her psychological self-portraits offer a theatrical encounter with the spectator in the hope of breaking through language, to touch life.

A finalist in numerous art prizes throughout her career, Cape is the winner of the Paddington Art Prize, The Portia Geach Memorial Award and the Geelong Art Prize. She is collected both locally and internationally and shows with Olsen Gallery, Sydney.

For OpenField, Cape will be able to be witnessed creating her work on site in the Princess st Reserve as well as showing a work in the Showground Main Pavilion.
